The SYRI-Alert project sets out to develop an early warning system for supply chain disruptions to increase the resilience of the Austrian food supply. The aim is to visualise (potential) disruptions in order to reduce food shortages in the event of a crisis and thereby contribute to a significant improvement in national food supply security. This will improve the responsiveness of institutions and companies and allow for an identification of possible threats to international supply chains at an early stage. Under the main lead of the Complexity Science Hub Vienna, the project brings together academics and research partners from industry as well as public institutions. To ensure that the early warning system is in line with competition law, Vicky Robertson is tasked with supporting the project with competition law-related research on information exchange.

Charting a Greener Future for EU Competition Law

The project sets out to harness the transformative power of environmental sustainability by charting new ways for a greener future for European competition law. It includes a normative doctrinal inquiry as well as a methodological study of tools and frameworks that can be relied upon when assessing the environmental harms and benefits from a competition law perspective. Antitrust violations in their various forms result in considerable costs and disadvantages for competitors, customers and the public at large. Yet uncovering such violations is often difficult, as they frequently happen in secret. However, in the wake of digitalization, large amounts of data are often publicly available that may offer clues to (potential) antitrust violations. The DataComp project addresses open questions on the data-driven detection of competition law infringements both from the perspective of business analytics and from the perspective of competition law, while striving to set out the legal framework.

Judicial Review Project: Austrian Report

Within the broader framework of the EU-wide Judicial Review Project, we contribute the Austrian Report for this comprehensive empirical study mapping the judicial review of decisions by competition authorities. The Austrian Report focuses on decisions by the (Supreme) Cartel Court that were issued based on an application by the Austrian Federal Competition Authority under Articles 101 and 102 TFEU or the national equivalents of §§ 1 and 5 Austrian Cartel Act. It can be accessed here.
