Anti-Competitive Practices in Gaming

On 24 January 2025, Fabian Ziermann contributed to a panel on Competition and Business Law at the University of Bath Spa’s inaugural Press Start Conference on Creative and Innovation Regulation in Video Games. The panel addressed growing concerns about anti-competitive practices in the gaming industry, such as geo-blocking, exclusivity agreements, and data manipulation tactics that restrict consumer choice and inflate prices. Speakers criticized the misuse of IP protections to evade competition law, highlighting cases like Valve as examples of cross-border market restrictions undermining the EU’s Digital Single Market.
