Sports & Competition Law in Glasgow

On 26 February 2025, Fabian Ziermann held a seminar for the University of Glasgow’s Advanced Competition Law and Society postgraduate course on sports, Formula 1 and competition law. The seminar explored how competition law intersects with the economic and regulatory structures of professional sports and Formula 1, focusing on market definition and the boundaries between sporting and commercial conduct. It examined practices potentially amounting to cartel behaviour or abuse of dominance, such as league entry restrictions or engine freeze. Students assessed whether sports-specific actions could trigger competition law scrutiny, especially when governance overlaps with commercial interests.
